How do you define success?

Yesterday I had an interesting conversation with a few close family members. We were talking about our plans for the future and where we saw ourselves in the next few years. Then randomly my aunt (who loves a good debate) said: "I have an idea, lets have a debate about how we define success."

"What a great idea!" we all agreed.

So, each of the cousins started speaking about who they thought were successful, why they thought he/she was successful and how they would define their own success. The answers include: Bill Gates (as a successful person), money and happiness (as a state of being successful) and complete contentment (as a definition of our own success).

Ah, interesting answers my aunt said. Then she went on to describe what she defined as success, and it made perfect sense. She believes that success is defined by the legacy you leave behind. One day we are all going to die - what do we want to be remembered for? If we are remembered as strong willed people and remembered for strong qualities then that can be defined as success. I agree with that, if you die and you are only remembered as the sweet little lady who always shared a smile, and that's what you wanted to remembered for, then you are successful.

So, be the person you want to be so that you can be remember for the things that are important to you - ultimately you will gain complete success!

  1. Well written. Your aunt is a wise person and I think with more people thinking like that the world CAN become a better place and we as humans can become more successful, NOT defined by how much money we have in the bank.
